A death doula is a compassionate guide who provides emotional, spiritual, and practical support to individuals and their loved ones during the end-of-life journey. Much like a birth doula supports families as a new life enters the world, a death doula supports individuals and families as life draws to a close.
As a death doula, I walk alongside those facing a terminal illness, advanced age, or the natural process of dying. I offer a comforting presence, help facilitate important conversations, assist with legacy projects, provide education about the dying process, and support family members before, during, and after a loved one's passing.
A death doula does not replace hospice care—instead, we complement and enhance the care hospice provides.
Hospice teams focus on medical care, symptom management, and ensuring comfort for the patient. A death doula focuses on the non-medical aspects of dying by offering additional emotional, spiritual, and practical support tailored to the individual's wishes and values.
Together, hospice and a death doula create a more holistic approach to end-of-life care. While hospice manages physical comfort, a death doula can provide companionship, help create meaningful experiences, assist with advance planning, facilitate difficult conversations, offer respite to caregivers, and ensure that a person's final wishes are honored.
The goal is simple: that no one feels alone, unheard, or unsupported during one of life's most sacred transitions.
At House of Mercy Collective, I believe that every person deserves dignity, comfort, compassion, and presence as they take their final breath, and every family deserves support as they navigate the journey alongside them.
